WVB | Kodiaks Fall Short Against The Queens

Nov. 23nd, 2019 - The Lethbridge College Kodiaks were back in action Saturday afternoon, prepared to redeem themselves from Friday's loss against the Red Deer College Queens.

The Kodiaks and Queens started the first set fighting point for point as each team was consistent play by play to take the lead. The Queens finally managed to sneak past the Kodiaks and take a 3-point advantage, however the Kodiaks regrouped, matching the Queens score once again. With a score of 19-20 the Queens coach, Talbot Walton pulled his team for a timeout, as an attempt to regain control of the set, however it deemed to be ineffective as the Kodiaks took the set 25-21.

Maile Funa from the Kodiaks brought the heat into the second set as took a swing from the middle, getting her team the first point. Nevertheless, Queens took control right from underneath the Kodiaks feet, stunning Anna Schwark their head coach. Red Deer increased their intensity, leaving Kodiaks no room for error. As the Kodiaks were unable to get out their own heads, Queens found their groove and dominated the second set taking it 25-18.

The Queens maintained their momentum into the third set, successfully taking an early lead. However, the Kodiaks were not prepared to lose another set, as they fought tooth and nail to surpass the Queens lead. As the set continued, it was a toss up at this point on who would be coming out with a win this set. The Queens successfully carried over their momentum the second set, allowing them to win their second set of night 26-24, only needing one more set to win it all. Kodiaks middle, Maile Funa had achieved 6 blocks in the game so far, attempting to slow down the Queens intense offensive line, however the Queens outside hitter, Emma Holmes achieved 4 kills in the third set alone, not letting the Kodiaks defense to get to her and her team.

The queens came out stronger in the fourth quarter as they did not have to look back. The Kodiaks came out battling to bounce back from a tough third set loss as Kodiaks Right Side, Mack Lewicki, brought Lethbridge back the lead with three kills at the beginning of the set. However, the set remained closed with the Queens building a 9-8 lead, the Queens did not look back at this point as they went on a run and finished off the set 25 -12.  Emma Holmes and Jade Van Dyke were essential pieces on the court for Red Deer, Emma achieved 15 kills while Jade had 9 kills and 7 digs as it was more than enough to carry the Queens over the Kodiaks.  Kodiak's Kylie Morrison finished the game with 8 kills and 9 digs for Lethbridge.
