Broncos lose in three to CCAA number 2 ranked Briercrest

OLDS, AB - Olds College Broncos women's volleyball team lost 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-14) to the Briercrest College Clippers in the Christmas Celebration Night Friday, Nov. 29 at the Ralph Klein Centre.

Briercrest jumped out to a 6-0 lead, forcing an Olds timeout. Briercrest kept their six point lead until 10-4, when the Broncos started to fight back but Briercrest held their advantage through the first set. Broncos where forced to take another time-out. With the score 22-14 the Broncos began to make a push to win back some points before the end of the set with Briercrest eventually taking the set 25-19 with some strong kills.

The teams went back and forth at the start of the second set, Briercrest went on a 4 point run from being down 6-4 to leading 8-6. The Broncos bounced back to tie up the score and the teams went back and forth with neither team able to build more than a one point lead until Briercrest took a 12-10 lead. The Broncos then bounced back to tie the score 13-13. The teams continued to go back and forth, until Briercrest took an 18-15 lead and forced an Olds timeout. Briercrest increased their lead to 23-15 out of the timeout before the Broncos briefly turned the momentum to cut the lead to 23-17. An incredible lunging dig away from the net by Samantha Laboucan scores a point for Olds but Briercrest took the second set 25-18.

Briercrest jumped out to another early lead in the third set, building it up to 16-9. Tabi Martin got a monster kill to try to change the momentum and the teams then exchanged points until Briercrest took the third set 25-14.

Player of the game for Briercrest was Rebecca Garner with a game high 14 kills and two service aces and the Pit Barbecue Player of the Game for the Broncos was Francesca Sandini with a game high 13 digs.

Briercrest held the advantage in kills 36-17, assists 33-15, service aces 9-4, digs 46-39 and blocks 7-2. Tabitha Martin had a team high seven kills and a block, Avery Gammel had a team high 10 assists, Samantha Laboucan had a game high two aces and Janeen Pellat had a block for Olds.

The Broncos host Briercrest College again tomorrow Saturday, Nov. 30 at 1:00 pm for Every Child Matters game.
