Ferguson and Queens defeat Briercrest College, face Falcons for national bronze

Quebec, QC - RDC first-year Jaiden Ferguson didn't let the bright lights of the national stage faze her at all.

The five-foot-ten outside hitter received some playing time leading up to the bronze semi-final, picking up a pair of kills against the Lynx. On Saturday, she took advantage of her opportunities and really shone when it mattered most.

Ferguson came off the bench and sparked the Queens to a five set victory over their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference rivals, the Briercrest College Clippers (24-26, 25-23, 21-25, 25-14 and 15-12), advancing to the bronze medal match.

The Business Administration student efficiently recorded 11 kills, three digs and one of the Queens' 14 aces, while swinging for an impressive 0.474 hitting percentage. Ferguson was named the Queens Player-of-the-Game.

Calgary's Erin Neufeldt had a match-high 12 kills. Middle Alexandria Greenshields was effective, contributing 11 kills, three blocks, two digs and an ace. Fourth-year outside hitter Jade Van Dyke provided energy and accumulated six kills. Setter Emma Letkeman had 48 assists.

Libero Kaylee Domoney was solid, once again, finishing with 17 digs.

Kirsty Kindrachuk received the Clippers Player-of-the-Game award. She had 15 digs, two assists and a kill.

Rebecca Garner and Faith Buhler led the Briercrest offence with 11 kills each. Garner was named a Tournament All-Star.

At 6:00 pm EDT, the Queens will play the Fanshawe Falcons for national bronze. The Falcons shaded the Queens in five sets to open the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Women's Volleyball National Championship.

The Elans de Garneau and Vancouver Island University (VIU) Mariners will compete for gold at 8:00 EDT.
