Women's volleyball Huskies fall to Rustlers in four sets

The Keyano Huskies women's volleyball team pushed the Lakeland Rustlers to a fourth set, but weren't able to come away with the four-set victory (25-20, 25-10, 22-25, 25-16) Saturday at the Syncrude Sport and Wellness Centre, taking the loss for the second time in as many days.

The Rustlers claimed the first set by a 25-20 score and powered through the second set 25-10. The Huskies rallied to control the third set, winning it 25-22 before falling 25-16 in the fourth set.

"On the whole weekend, I think our team did some really good things at times," said Karlene Kaminski. "We definitely struggled in certain areas, but I think that's going to translate over to our practices. We're definitely all going to work a lot harder.

"Our eyes were really opened up to a lot of things lying underneath on our team. I think it only goes up from here."

Tyneille Neufeld had 11 kills and 12 digs for the Huskies while Kaminski contributed five assists and a pair of digs. Megan Polant led the team with four service aces while adding three kills. Local product Raisa Stokes had nine kills to her credit.

Erika Box had 14 assists while Nicki Jonkman compiled 11 of her own.

Despite dropping to 0-4 on the season, the team still has plenty of schedule left in their season and have three solid opportunities in their final games of the first half to get into the win column.

"Our coach made a really good point today that we still have 75 per cent of our season left to go," noted Kaminski. "I think if anything, these last four games are just adding fuel to our fire and we're going to come back a better team."

The Huskies take to the road next weekend when they play the Grande Prairie Regional College Wolves. Friday's matchup is scheduled to begin at 8:00 p.m. with Saturday's rematch set for 3:00 p.m.
