SAIT wins close contest in Medicine Hat
Hoping to match their 3 set victory the night previous, the SAIT Trojans headed down to Medicine Hat to take on the Rattlers. The Rattlers started an entire rookie lineup and got off to a very slow mistake filled start. Down 8-1 quick, the Rattlers called a timeout to try and shift the momentum before it was too late. The Damage was however done as the Trojans continued to slowly build on their sizable lead going up 20-8 with a huge win on a long rally. The Rattlers started to rally a bit late in the set and closed the SAIT lead to 6 before the Trojans could respond. It was however too big a deficit as the Trojans took the first set 25-18
The Second set started with the Rattlers staying right with the Trojans for the first points of the set. With much crisper play coming from both sides neither team gave away any easy points and the teams were knotted at 5. The first real advantage came as the Trojans went up 10-8 resulting in the Rattlers using their first timeout of the set. The teams remained deadlocked as the score climbed higher entering the late stages of the set. The score was 20-20 as the end of the set got closer with neither team holding an advantage. The Rattlers were able to win the next 2 points on scramble rallies and pulled ahead by 2 forcing SAIT to take a timeout at risk of losing their first set of the weekend. With the Rattlers serving 3 straight aces to take the second set 25-20.
The Rattlers were able to continue to hold their momentum over to the next set, going up 4-2 early with a few strong defensive plays. Both sides were struggling with serving with 2 service errors early. The Trojans were able to respond thanks to a pair of aces and were able to even the score at 7. The set remained close with momentum shifting back and forth with both teams energy high. The score remained knotted with the teams ever at 16 where the Rattlers won a long rally to regain a one point lead. The Trojans rattled off 3 quick points following this and the Rattlers called timeout down 17-19. The Trojans were able to extend their lead late, going up 23-19 before the Rattlers could respond. With a quick burst of their own Medicine Hat was able to close the gap to one, 22-23 and forced SAIT to take a timeout. SAIT scored on a Rattler error out of the break and had the chance to serve for the set. It took a side out on the next play but SAIT prevailed 25-23 and took a 2-1 set lead.
The fourth set started with the Trojans scoring the first 5 points opening up a commanding early lead. The Rattlers finally responded to get on the board down 4. 3 straight points from the home side saw the Trojan lead shrink but not disappear. The Rattlers looked to exploit the middle and were able to come back to trail 5-6. From here the Trojans once again strung together 3 straight to expand their lead again. Another string of points from SAIT saw the score 13-6 and forced Medicine Hat to take a timeout. This did not help much as the Trojans expanded their lead to 10, 17-7. From here the teams traded side outs as the score climbed closer to a Trojan Victory. At the end the Trojans took the 4th set 25-11.
