Vikings continue to shine in win over Huskies

CAMROSE, AB - Sweeping the weekend series the Augustana Viking down the Keyano College Huskies 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-22), Saturday afternoon at Augustana Gym.

With the win the Viking move secured first place in the ACAC North Division for the time being, with the Lakeland Rustlers playing tonight against the NAIT Ooks, a win for the Rustlers would tie both teams at the top of the table once again. In addition to the high league standings, the Vikings also extended their win streak to five games and improved to 9-1 on the season.

On the other hand, the Huskies sit in fourth place in the north with a 3-7 record on the season. They remain tied with the Grande Prairie Wolves for fourth place in the north.

Having another impressive game, third-year Shae Boyes added another 18 kills to bring her season total to 139, second-best in the ACAC. Adding to her stats, she also had six digs and two aces. Teammate Sarah Dedrick added 33 assists in her team's win.

Across the court, rookie outside hitter Karlene Kaminski was a standout for her side with five kills, two digs, and one ace. Setter Jamie Stokes had 15 assists in the loss.

It was a tale of two teams, with the Vikings finding their game early in the first set having 15 kills, their most per set all game, and sliding to a quick 25-16 win, while the Huskies struggled to settle in, being successful with just two kills during the opening set.

Not willing to let up, even as their guests warmed up to the match, the Vikings gave very little room for the Huskies to try to stay alive in the game, making just eight kill errors all game and gathering a team total of 52.0 points compared to the Huskies 30.0.

Looking ahead, the Vikings will battle it out for the top spot in the league as they take on the Lakeland Rustlers next weekend in a home-and-home series. The weekend also marks the Vikings RBC Make Some Noise for Mental Health weekend. The Huskies will host the NAIT Ooks in a three-game weekend series on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
