Lions Sweep Saturday Match Against Clippers
Briercrest and Ambrose met on Saturday at the Margaret P. Reimer Memorial Gymnasium in Caronport, SK for the second match of their weekend series. The visiting Lions looked to maintain their perfect record, while the Clippers hoped to reach .500.
From the get-go, Briercrest libero Jaryn Janzen displayed some steely defense and Faith Buhler delivered the necessary offense and blocking presence to give the hosts a 9-7 edge. The Clippers pressured Ambrose to call timeout and the Lions responded with strong offensive play and stout defense. Ambrose's Elise Wagner pushed the visitor's lead to 21-18, and Taylor Hart served out the game, 25-20, with an ace.
Early in set two, Ambrose's offense was matched by Briercrest's serving prowess. Hart helped give the Lions a 12-9 advantage, but Clippers' Faith Buhler broke their progress with a right-side attack. Ambrose quickly pushed the lead to 16-11 as Lions' Gracee Fehr led the attack with impeccable serving. Clippers' setter Jess Zacharias repeatedly fed Faith Buhler on the right side, and the hosts flipped the momentum with kills to the deep backcourt, but Fehr's successful right-side attack secured the set for Ambrose, 25-22.
Despite an impressive tandem block by Clippers' Julia Beer and Faith Buhler early in set three, errors by the home team and aggressive serving by Ambrose allowed the visitors to race ahead 9-7. Briercrest middle Rachel Stead drew her company even, but the Lions capitalized on Clippers miscues to double their lead. As the Clippers shored up their defense, they whittled the lead down to one, and Julia Beer and Faith Buhler stuffed the Lions' attack to give the hosts a 23-22 lead. Ambrose wrestled the lead back after a frenetic rally, and their setter Alexa Herrod, a standout all weekend, served out the win, 27-25.
Player of the Game honours were given to Ambrose's #2 Taylor Hall (7 kills, 3 digs, and 3 aces) and Briercrest's #12 Faith Buhler, who notched 9 kills, 3 stuff blocks and an ace. Both setters, Jess Zacharias and Alexa Herrod, ran the offenses with precision and vigour over the two matches.
