Vikings spear Rattlers in the Snake Pit
The Augastana Vikings Headed into the Snake pit to take on the Medicine Hat College Rattlers. The teams started by trading a pair of aces and sideouts to kick things off. Former Rattler Sarah Singular got to the service line and reeled off 4 straight points to give the visitors a 7-3 lead. Medicine Hat responded with a quick side out only to be matched from the Vikings. The Rattlers started to quickly chip away at the lead and got within 1, trailing 8-9. Another quick 2 points trung together saw the set tied at 10. Neither team seemed able to grab any early momentum as the set crossed the midway point. Neither team was particularly efficent on the attack, but some sloppy defense allowed quick side outs both ways. As the game neared the end, the Vikings were able to jump out to a 3 point lead forcing the Rattlers to take a timeout. Able to press their advantage, Augustana took the first set 25-20.
The second set saw the Vikings continue to ride their momentum from the first. Able to open up a 7-4 lead, Augustana looked to try and press this again as they slowly extended their lead 12-6 and forced the Rattlers to burn a timeout. With this early deficit, the Rattlers made some subs in an attempt to shake things up. This worked as the teams traded a few side-outs. It was too little too late however as the Vikings continued to cruise putting up points quickly. As the set came to a close the score read 25-13 with the vikings taking a 2 set lead.
Once again the Vikings carried their momentum into the next set going up 10-3 early. A ton of long rallies seemed to all be won by Augustana. The Rattlers started to bring it back and force side-outs, but the Vikings continued to hold a distinct advantage. Late in the set the Rattlers started to chip away at the vikings lead clawing back into the set. Down only 19-22 the Rattlers looked like the team with all the momentum. But they had too big a deficit to overcome as the Vikings took the third set 25-20 completing the sweep.
