Thunder Come Booming Back
EDMONTON, AB (February 11th, 2023) - Concordia University of Edmonton (CUE) Thunder took on the Old's Broncos in an exciting match to close out their home season. Tonight, we celebrated our graduating athletes Tanisha Cronin #9 and Emma Derbyshire #4. It was an intense matchup against the Broncos that stayed neck and neck up until the third set. Thunder came into the third on a mission and they kept that energy throughout the rest of the game to win it 3-2.
The Thunder came out strong in the first set, and the Broncos followed shortly after. Neither team with a lead bigger than three, and multiple blocks on either side, but the Broncos edged out the Thunder in the first set 27-25. In the second set, there were lots of chaotic digs that sent the ball out of bounds. Again, the second set was neck and neck from the start. The Broncos will take the second set 25-23. The Broncos are up two sets to none. The Thunder were calm and collected heading into the third set bringing a higher intensity as they dominated on the court. The Thunder earning a quick lead puts their foot on the accelerator and kills it offensively and defensively. The Thunder win the third set 25-6. The Broncos still lead 2-1. In the fourth set, you could feel the energy and momentum gaining for the Thunder. They battled back and forth but CUE was able to even things out and win the fourth set 25-17 and tie it at two a piece. In the fifth set, we saw strong offensive plays. Thunder quickly gained separation after some well-executed decisions. The Thunder win set five and the game, 15-6, for the ultimate comeback.
The One Team Sport players of the game were #13 Tabi Martin from the Broncos. From the Thunder, #9 Tanisha Cronin alongside #4 Emma Derbyshire, our graduating seniors! The girls had an incredible game, and we can't say enough about how they have contributed to Thunder Athletics. Tonight, marked the final game of the regular season for your Thunder Volleyball Team.
