CUE Runners Finish First and Second in Both Races at Grand Prix #1 (North)

EDMONTON, AB - ACAC Cross-Country Running returned to action on Saturday, September 18, as the 2021 season kicked off with the first Grand Prix race of the season, sponsored by The Running Room, and hosted by the Concordia University of Edmonton (CUE) Thunder.

The course took the runners through the beautiful river valley in Edmonton, and the day had perfect weather for the runners, who navigated the 2 km course in 20 degree weather with a mix of sun and cloud.

The men kicked off the event, and CUE's Leonard Chesoo crossed the line first – finished the 8 km race in 28:37. CUE's Brandon Toal came in second, finishing in 29:21. Red Deer Polytechnic rounded out the top five with Daniel Szucs (30:22), Devin Saunders (32:08), and Jayden Wildcat (33:23) all finishing one after another. The men's team results saw Red Deer finishing first, with CUE in second and Grande Prairie Regional College rounding out the podium.

For the women's 6 km event, CUE runners once again finished first and second with Emma Derbyshire (28:44) crossing first, followed by Taylor Chamberlain (29:12). Red Deer's Justine Larson came in third with a time of 29:53, Augustana's Chloe Funnell finished fourth (30:30), and CUE's Gillian Nachtigall rounded out the top five finishing in 30:41. The women's team results saw CUE finish first, with Augustana in second and Red Deer third.

The Cross-Country season continues on October 2nd when the University of Alberta-Augustana welcomes the runners for Grand Prix #2.
