Chesoo and Fitzgerald Repeat as ACAC Champions
EDMONTON, AB (October 29, 2022) – The 2022 ACAC Cross-Country Running Championships took place on Saturday, October 29 at Gold Bar Park in Edmonton hosted by Concordia University of Edmonton. A sunny but chilly and windy day, the conditions proved ideal for the runners during the course through the river valley.
In the women's event, SAIT's Makenna Fitzgerald came in first place, finishing the 6 km route in just under 23 minutes to repeat as ACAC Women's Cross-Country Champion. She was followed by Augustana's Reese Bendiksen, who finished her course in 23 and a half minutes, and Red Deer's Jenica Swartz rounded out the podium for the bronze medal.
Medicine Hat runners came in 4th (Rebecca Ross; 24:13) and 6th place (Maddy Scimger; 24:52) to clinch the ACAC women's team title for the Rattlers in a close contest. St. Mary's finished second in the ACAC women's team event, with runners finishing 5th (Maria Fox; 24:40) , 9th (Sydney Zissos; 25:29) and 10th (Cadence Laplante; 25:31). Red Deer claimed third in the team event for the women.
In the men's individual race, Concordia's Leonard Chesoo clinched his third straight men's individual title, finishing the 8 km course in 26:21. He was followed closely by SAIT's Moktar Said, who finished in 26:36 to claim the silver. SAIT's Keiran Marchand rounded out the podium, grabbing bronze in a time of 26:53.
In the team event, SAIT claimed the title after Said finished in 2nd, Marchand in 3rd, Tofik Said (27:16) in 4th, and Yahye Jama (27:51) in 6th. Red Deer finished in second place, and Lethbridge rounded out the top three.
With the ACAC season now wrapped up, the runners will be able to catch their breath and rest before heading to Medicine Hat for the 2022 CCAA Cross-Country Running National Championship, hosted by Medicine Hat College on November 12th.
