Dekoning breaks ACAC all-time saves record
The Red Deer Kings travelled to Caronport this week-end to face off against the Briercrest Clippers, who are still in the hunt for the final playoff spot (Red Deer having already clinched a berth). With it being the final home series of 2019-20 for Briercrest, friends, family and alumni filled the Barkman Arena to cheer on their favourite players tonight.
Briercrest was also focused on a potential record-breaking performance from netminder Daniel Dekoning, and with every save he made to keep the visitors off the board, he came closer to the career saves record, until tonight, held by two former netminders for the Clippers - Jesse Chenard and Shane Marsh, he broke the record.
It was at the 5:45 point of the first period that Red Deer's #22 Lynnden Pastachak got a top corner goal on Briercrest to open the scoring. Other than a couple trips to the penalty box by both teams, the rest of the period was uneventful. Shots were 19- 7 in favour of the visitors.
The second period opened with Briercrest on the power play, but they were unable to capitalize on the man advantage. Briercrest got into some penalty trouble of their own as they aggressively looked for a scoring opportunity, but it was Red Deer who was able to find the back of the net again. Just before the 15:00 mark, a stunning save gave Dan Dekoning the numbers he needed to become the all-time saves leader at 3604 career saves. He didn't stop there, continuing to make spectacular stops but in the final seconds of the period, an unfortunate deflection gave the visitors a comfortable 3-0 lead. Shots were 15-11 for Red Deer.
Hoping to spark something in their team, the 3rd period saw a change in netminders for the Clippers and Billy Cawthorn got the nod for the final frame. The Kings were not deterred, and they continued to send a barrage of shots at the net, finding the twine four more times before the final horn sounded. Shots in the final frame were 13-6 for Red Deer and the Clippers fell 7-0 to the visiting Kings.
Player of the game for Red Deer was #10 Chase Thudium with 2 goals and an assist. Briercrest honoured seniors Chad Davidson and Blayd Anholt as co-players of the game for the home team.
The re-match between these teams goes at 2:00pm tomorrow in Caronport. It surely will not disappoint!
