The Kings avenge last nights loss with an impressive 6-4 win of their own
Red Deer, November 19 - The Kings hockey team will look for some revenge after conceding three goals in the matter of two minutes against the NAIT Ooks last night in Edmonton. The Kings had a 4-2 lead with five minutes left to play but that did not stop the Ooks from scoring three unanswered goals to take the game 5-4. The Kings played host to NAIT at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre on Saturday night.
The Ooks would score their fourth straight goal against the Kings, going back to last night, to take the early lead in the first period. NAIT would have an odd man rush with second-year forward Nicholas Leyer (Personal Fitness Trainer) receiving a pass on the far side. He would wait out the Kings goaltender, who dove across the net and go down on the ice which is where Leyer would flick it over Evan Fradette (Open Studies) for the opening goal of the game.
NAIT would continue their scoring streak with their second goal going on the powerplay. Rookie forward Garin Butler (Instrumentation Engineering Technology) was down low in front of the net where he received the pass but he was stopped on his first attempt by Fradette. But Butler would not be denied on his second attempt as he slid it between the goaltender and the post.
The Kings would finally end the Ooks scoring streak after killing off visiting team's powerplay. Moments after the penalty kill was over as forward Jacob Kendall (Bachelor of Education Elementary) stepped out of the box, he was sprung on a breakaway. Kendall would juke out the Ooks goaltender and put it top shelf to cut into the visitors lead.
Minutes later, Kendall would score his second goal to tie the game up at two with under five minutes left to go as he buried an open puck inside the blue paint.
In an eventful first period that saw four goals, two for both sides, the Kings would have the slight edge in shots with 13 to the Ooks 11 shots on goal.
Just like the first, the Ooks would the second with a goal on an odd-man rush. NAIT would break out of their own zone with where they would find forward Bryce Osepchuk (Power Engineering Technology) in the slot, and he would wrist it past a screened Fradette to take their lead back.
The Kings would answer right back after a great forecheck led to a turnover in front of the Ooks net. Rookie Deegan Mofford (Open Studies) would take advantage of this mistake and lift it past fourth-year Taryn Kotchorek (Bachelor of Business Administration) to tie it up at three.
Red Deer would be put on a 5-on-3 powerplay for just about two minutes with just over a minute to go after the Ooks took back-to-back penalties to finish off the second frame. The Kings would take advantage of these two penalties and score to take their first lead of the game. Captain Chance Longjohn found a seam and would thread the needle to forward Nolan Doell (Bachelor of Education), who would one-time it home for RDP's fourth goal.
To start off the third period, the Ooks would kill off the remaining minutes left on the penalty from the second period and just minutes later, NAIT was awarded a penalty shot. The referee claimed the Ooks player was on a breakaway and called a holding penalty which resulted in a penalty shot and a goal in the end for second-year Eric Lacombe (Bachelor of Business Administration).
The Kings would storm back to take their lead which resulted in a hat trick for Kendall. This would be his ninth goal of the season for the forward out of Camrose.
Late in the third, the Kings would score moments after winning the face-off in the Ooks zone. Centre Dylan Esau won the draw and Kendall would pick up the loose puck on the dot. He would drive across the net and slide it under the pad of Osepchuk for his fourth of the game.
The Kings would avenge last night's loss to the Ooks with a 6-4 win tonight. It was a busy night for both goaltenders with the Kings outshooting NAIT 47-34.
The players of the game went to Bryce Osepchuk from the Ooks and Jacob Kendall from the Kings. Osepchuk had a goal out of the slot in the first period and Kendall had an impressive four goals on the night.
The Kings will be back on ice next week at home against the Concordia University Thunder with the puck dropping at 7 pm for their last home game of 2022. The NAIT Ooks will play host to the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings at 7 pm on November 25.
