Rustlers advance to ACAC Championship match
CAMROSE, Alta. — The Lakeland Rustlers booked their spot in the gold medal match at the ACAC Women's Volleyball Championships with a straight-sets victory over the NAIT Ooks in semifinal action on Friday.
In a match defined by momentum swings and relentless offence, the Rustlers controlled key moments to secure the win in three sets (25-22, 25-16, 25-18). With the victory, Lakeland advances to the championship final scheduled for tomorrow at 4:30 p.m., where they will face the winner of the semifinal between the Augustana Vikings and the Briercrest Clippers.
The Ooks came out strong, jumping to an early lead and setting the tone in the opening set. However, Lakeland found its rhythm late, led by a surge from Avery Bates, as the Rustlers clawed back into contention at 22-21. Riding a hot offence down the stretch, Lakeland closed the set 25-22.
The second set featured high-level volleyball on both sides, with standout hitters trading points. Katie Nashim powered the Ooks' attack, while Bates continued to anchor the Rustlers' offence. Lakeland widened the gap midway through the set, fueled by a dominant performance from Olivia DeDecker, and carried the momentum to a decisive 25-16 win.
Determined to extend the match, NAIT responded with gritty defence and improved front-row play. Madge Prince found success at the net, connecting effectively with setter Lexi Gedny. The set remained tight early, but Lakeland pulled away after a key run, turning a narrow margin into a commanding lead. The Rustlers sealed the match with a 25-18 finish.
Lakeland's balanced attack and ability to capitalize on momentum proved to be the difference, sending the Rustlers to the championship final with a chance to claim ACAC gold.
